Bespoke chandeliers.

Over the years of our art practice in glass, we have been fascinated with the interaction of glass and light. We found that we were always viewing the glass by holding it up to light, and with that an interest in hanging glass began. With our sheep carcass, lamb shanks and other cuts of meat, we loved the way glass played with light whenever it was suspended. This interest in glass, light and suspension led us in the direction of chandeliers or light works.

Our first chandelier ā€˜R.I.P’ was made in 2006. This work received great critical acclaim. The birds hanging from fishhooks in the form of a classical chandelier received an overwhelming response. This chandelier found its final resting place at the Headquarters of 42 Below Vodka Auckland, New Zealand. From this our interest and stimulation within the historical form of the chandelier began to grow.

In 2007 we were awarded an overseas residency at C.G.C.A - the Creative Glass Centre of America. Here we concentrated on learning glass techniques that allowed us to produce a multiple of pieces in press moulds, which made it possible to make and produce chandeliers in a sustainable way.

During 2008 we continued to design, develop, and refine our interest in chandeliers. We wanted to produce chandeliers for a contemporary domestic market. This became a challenge in combining art, craft, design and industry. As a result of this intense development period it has captured our artistic focus and continues to this day. We have been commissioned to make a number of chandeliers for private homes and living spaces. For the clients, their decision to get a chandelier made was very much about creating a family heirloom.

Our chandeliers are all handmade here in New Zealand. We make the glass components within our studio in Martinborough, or we work in hot glass studios within New Zealand. Each piece of glass is hand formed and hand coloured within a mould. Our frames are made in collaboration with a metal worker Dave Irons of Ironstein, Featherston, New Zealand. The clips and fittings for the glass components are handmade by us fitting each piece individually.

Currently we make one off pieces. We make to commission and we make for only a few art galleries. Because of our small intimate production of our chandeliers we thrive with this bespoke approach. We can make to any scale and, within artistic reason, can hand colour. The bird wings and tails chandeliers in the domestic size have around 140 individual pieces on them. With 'Sugar Cloud' there is over 200 handmade glass roses and 200 plus hanging kowhai. They are labour intensive and take about 6– 14 weeks to make depending on scale and design. We are always designing and developing new forms and ideas, so if you have a project in mind, getting in contact with us is a good start. We love responding and customising to site-specific situations.
